Brevik CCS reaches new milestone

First CO₂ captured in Brevik as part of ramp-up phase

By the end of 2024, the CO₂ capture plant at Brevik was mechanically complete on schedule (read more here)
Since then, the team has been busy commissioning the facility, testing it under real operating conditions to prepare for stable, long-term operation.

During last week, a new key milestone was reached: the first 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ were captured, liquefied, and safely stored in the large CO2-tanks next to the cement plant. This is part of the plant’s ongoing ramp-up phase.
"Since Mechanical Completion in December last year, our team in Brevik have worked tirelessly on the commissioning and startup of the Carbon Capture plant, and  in the early hours of Friday last week, we had stored 1.000 tons of liquid CO2. Our team members have had to tackle hundreds of smaller and larger issues along the way, as is the nature of commissioning and startup.

They have kept focus and structure in their approach working on a truly unique and game changing project, the world’s first CCS facility at scale in the cement industry. So proud of our team!" says Giv Brantenberg, General Manager Heidelberg Materials Northern Europe.

Meanwhile, Northern Light’s custom-built CO₂ transport ship, Northern Pioneer, has been prepared for its future role in shipping captured CO₂ from Brevik to Øygaarden.
